Tesla Cybertruck Production Delayed Until 2024
During Tesla's fourth quarter earnings call, CEO Elon Musk announced that full volume production of the highly anticipated Cybertruck will not begin until 2024.
This news comes as a disappointment for those who were hoping for a mid-2023 production start date, which was previously set by the company. Musk did confirm, however, that manufacturing of the electric pickup truck will begin "sometime this summer."
He also acknowledged that the production process for the Cybertruck is slow to start, but increases exponentially over time.
The Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019 to much fanfare, but its production has been plagued by delays. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in pre-production, which was originally slated to begin in late 2021.
Additionally, Musk has previously stated that the final specs and pricing for the Cybertruck may be different from what was initially announced.
Despite the delays, Tesla has started installing the necessary production equipment for the Cybertruck's assembly at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.
This includes the machinery used to create the electric pickup's body. However, industry experts have warned that the slower production timeline could negatively impact the Cybertruck's market impact, as it will be entering a crowded field of electric pickups from other manufacturers.
The Cybertruck's design, which features an aggressive, post-apocalyptic aesthetic, has generated significant attention. However, as the competition in the electric pickup market continues to grow, it is possible that the Cybertruck may begin to feel like "old news" to consumers.
It remains to be seen how Tesla will address these concerns and successfully bring the Cybertruck to market.
